Sugi,
cultivate the energy
Sugi (修氣) means cultivating (修) the energy (氣). Sugi trains the power of martial arts, the energy that comes from the core, Danjeon.
Many modern Hapkido techniques use muscle strength. It may work in training as the strength and size of your opponent can be controllable. It doesn't work in an actual situation when the physical strength or body size of your opponent is out of control. Sugi Hapkido uses the power of Danjeon. It neutralizes the opponent's physical strength and complies with the opponent's energy, not go against it. The energy taken away from the opponents is used in reverse to subdue them.
Sugi's teaching methods heavily lie on the partnership to develop agility, mobility, and distance management in a pair to respond best in defence or counterattack based on the opponent's movements.
The major aspects of the Sugi curriculum are striking (punching/kicking), grappling, joint-lock, and sparring.
1
YOUTH / ADULT HAPKIDO CLASS

INSTRUCTOR/MASTER CLASS
Invitation-only, this exclusive monthly online class is designed for Masters and Instructors currently in a position to share advanced techniques and effective teaching methods.
Sugi's curriculum evolves.
No technique sits untouched without constant testing and honing for perfection during every class. The Sugi Hapkido curriculum focused on the original Hapkido method - taking and using back the opponent's energy to maximize the efficiency in defence. There are three major aspects in Hapki-Sul (합기술): Ta-gyeog Sul (타격술), 유술(YuSul), and Gwanjeol-gi (관절기). Beginner students start their training journey with Ta-gyeog Sul, a single or combination of striking, kicking, and punching techniques, and work their way up to YuSul(Grappling) and Gwanjeol-gi (Joint-lock).
Learning adequate manners and cultural aspects of Hapkido is a significant element of Sugi Hapkido training to develop resilience and self-control while bringing harmony in training with others. All levels of students are required to pass a verbal interview during the belt testing, answering questions about the history and principles of Hapkido and sharing their journey in learning the martial arts.
CURRICULUM.
유술 (柔術) Yu-Sul
Grappling / Throwing
-
Inspired by Judo, Machigi is an advanced throwing technique with a strong finish when attacked with a punch or kick.
-
Wasul is to subdue the opponent using Judo and Jiu-jitsu-inspired grappling techniques. Wasul finishes the defence/attack with joint locks such as arm-bar or leg-bar.
타격술 (打擊術) TaGyeog-Sul
Striking - Punching/Kicking
-
Sugi's punching techniques train us to transmit the power from Danjeon, the body's center, through the lats to the arms to hit the target, preventing acute muscle strain on the arms or wrists.
-
Sugi's kicking initiates the power from Danjeon and transmits it through the leg, not from the muscles in the legs. It prevents knee strain and enables kickers to throw kicks short distances in the combats.
관절기 (關節技) Gwanjeol-gi
Joint Lock
-
Gwanjeolgi, joint-lock, is a modified application of the traditional Hapkido techniques that can be useful in combat or street fights
-
Gwanjeolgi is to defend and suppress the opponent simultaneously with your joints at the moment of an opponent's attack. Gwanjeolgi is simple and relatively easy to learn, so it is often taught as an introductory step before learning other advanced Hapki-sul.
맞서기 (對決) Majseo-gi
Sparring
-
Standing Fight
-
Free-arranged Sparring involves wearing only gloves and shin guards without wearing protective gear and using the promised attack and defence techniques. It develops the ability to move the center of gravity and improves the distance between you and the opponent, which is vital in actual combat.
-
Freestyle sparring involves wearing gloves, shin guards, and face and genital protection. It refers to freely competing with an opponent in attack and defence without any set formula.
-
Jiu-jitsu Fight
YuSul covers the ground defence aspect of the Sugi curriculum using the traditional Jiu-jitsu principles of mastering leverage, angles, pressure, and timing. YuSul focuses on close-contact ground fighting techniques with an emphasis on Guard Control, Positional Escapes, Defensive Sweeps, and Offensive Submissions. What differentiates YuSul from traditional Jiu-Jitsu or BJJ is its simplicity and effectiveness.
합기술 (合氣術) Hapki-sul
Advanced Join Lock
-
Hapki-sul is the process of practicing advanced Hapkido joint lock techniques.
-
Hapki-sul is to overpower the opponent with the energy from the ground, intensified in Danjeon through hip engagement, and transmitted to hands and feet in explosive power.
-
Hapki-sul uses the opponent's power to redirect and break its center of gravity to suppress it efficiently.
